Reach Out and Read-Alabama makes connections and builds resilience in children and families

During a year when #makingconnections has been more difficult than normal, we know one of the best ways to support children and build resilience is to read books together. When children are cuddled in the lap of a loving caregiver, enjoying a book together, they feel safe and secure. Sharing books consistently can provide a sense of normalcy for families and help create important routines. Reach Out and Read providers, like Elizabeth Dawson, MD, FAAP, of Charles Henderson Child Health Center in Troy, prescribe spending time together with a book. This simple moment has a significant impact.

Though we have been in the midst of a public health crisis, because of Reach Out and Read-Alabama's placement within pediatric and primary care, it remains one of the only early childhood interventions able to reach children and families. This access allows providers to support their patients’ health and development and resilience. In addition, reading aloud with children eases family stress and fosters feelings of safety and security, building resilience and enabling families and children to make connections every day!
