Get involved in a fun, family event happening at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. On Saturday, May 6, the Alabama Chapter-American Academy of Pediatrics will host its fourth annual Grand Pediatric Pentathlon to benefit Reach Out and Read - Alabama.
The last three events have raised over $30,000!
In the last 10 years, Reach Out and Read- Alabama pediatric healthcare providers have prescribed more than 1.6 million brand-new books to the state’s youngest and most under-served children. That equates to more than 3,000 books each week that, through the program, find their way into the homes of the neediest children and families throughout the state.
In 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued a landmark policy statement promoting literacy as “an essential component of pediatric primary care” for all children. The policy references Reach Out and Read as an effective intervention to engage parents and prepare children to achieve their potential in school and beyond. This realized a long-term aim of Reach Out and Read to integrate early literacy promotion as routine practice in health checkups.
During the Chapter’s 2017 Spring Meeting being held May 4-7, participants (attendees, family members and vendors) will have the opportunity to register and participate in five events ~ biking, kayaking, fun run/walk, swimming and reading ~ designed to take advantage of the myriad of activities at the resort.
