Reach Out and Read-Alabama an essential part of well-child visits

Nothing but good things come from this program and now I consider it an essential part of a well child visit.

2017 was an incredible year for Reach Out and Read-Alabama with our pediatric healthcare providers prescribing 150,000 books to 100,000 children and their families at check-ups!

We were able to help children like Dawson Blue. Elizabeth Dawson, MD, FAAP is one of four pediatricians at Charles Henderson Child Health Center in Troy. Dr. Dawson prescribed Dawson’s first book when he turned six months old.

“I had the opportunity to share a book with him and talk to his Mom about the importance of reading to him, even at this age. Having this opportunity to explain to her how reading to him impacts his little brain is monumental in engaging the parents in their child’s development. As a pediatrician we talk to our families a lot about what to do and what not to do. Reach Out and Read is one of the few things I get to talk about while teaching and giving the parent a tool.”

Now at each well visit his face lights up as he gets a new book. “Nothing but good things come from this program and now I consider it an essential part of a well child visit.”
