The Alabama coach and his wife, Terry, held the 10th annual Nick's Kids luncheon at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa on Aug 3. Coach Saban and Ms.Terry distributed over $475,000 to more than 150 non-profit organizations that benefit children, student, teacher and family causes. "Reach Out and Read-Alabama is very grateful to be the recipient of this award for the fifth year," said Polly McClure, statewide coordinator. "Because of the generous award, pediatricians will prescribe 400 brand-new books to the children of Tuscaloosa County and encourage their parents to share these books together daily."
"Not only does the support of Nick's Kids Foundation provide brand-new books to the children of Tuscaloosa County, but our partnership with Reach Out and Read-Alabama provides the opportunity for these same pediatricians to refer children that have been identified as needing developmental services to Help Me Grow-Alabama," said Arkeisha Thomas, Help Me Grow Care Coordinator for Tuscaloosa County. "Linking children and their families to needed community based programs and services early is the key to their success in school and life."
"No man stands as tall as when he stoops to help child," Coach Saban said. “So Nick’s Kids really represents my father's legacy and what he was all about and what he tried to do. And Terry and I have just worked really hard to extend that through the years and are proud of what we’ve been able to do.”
Since 2011, donations from Nick's Kids Foundation to Reach Out and Read-Alabama has reached over 1,600 children and their families in Tuscaloosa County.
